Abstract:
This research comes under the title: (TV programs and
their effect in raising awareness of human rights issues and
fundamental freedoms - an analytical and descriptive study on
the programme (Opposite Direction) on Al-Jazeera satellite
channel. The significance of the research according to the
researcher's view, lies in the fact that it deals with a topic that
has not been addressed before, which is the subject of raising
awareness of human rights and freedoms in terms of media.
The aim of this research is to know the objectives of the Al-
Jazeera satellite channel and its editorial policy, and to know
the general rights and freedoms of opinion covered by the
channel. The researcher used the descriptive and analytical
methods. The problem was summed up in the effectiveness of
television programmes and the role of these programmes in
raising awareness of human rights issues and fundamental
freedoms in societies described as democratic systems, plus the
weak awareness of these rights. The researcher used the
research community, which included a sample of experts,
media people, and specialists in the fields of law, politics, and
human rights organizations. The researcher reached a number
of results, among which the most important are: Al-Jazeera
satellite channel was a forerunner in the level of Arab TV
channels in its handling of human rights issues. That is through
the various episodes in which the programme addressed and
defended human rights issues. The research also included
recommendations, among which the most important are: the
guests of the programme should respect each other, and there
should be a media reform that includes greater opportunities
for freedom of expression and respect for ideas and other
opinions
