Abstract

The researcher aims to conduct a descriptive study of Kurdish and Arabic, and identify the relationship between the two languages and the shared characteristics between them, and then to identify the possibility of writing the Kurdish language in Arabic script. The researcher used the descriptive analytical method, which describes and analyzes the sounds of the Kurdish language and the corresponding sounds in the Arabic language. The researcher also followed the contrastive method in order to compare the sounds of the two languages. Moreover, the researcher relied on the historical method in the study of the historical backgrounds. Based on the objectives of this study, the researcher divided the research into five chapters as follows: The first chapter includes the basics of the research, and the previous studies. In the second chapter, the researcher tackled the theoretical framework, which includes a historical overview of the Kurds and Kurdistan, the Kurdish regions, and the linguistic situation in Iraqi Kurdistan. In the third chapter, the researcher conducted a descriptive study of the sounds of the Kurdish language and compared them with the sounds of the Arabic language. He also tackled the syllables, the stress and intonation in each of the two languages. Chapter four includes writing the Kurdish language in Arabic script and its role in the dissemination of the Arabic language to non-native speakers in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The fifth chapter, which is the last one, includes the findings and recommendations, the sources and references, and the appendices and index of tables
