Abstract

This thesis, through a descriptive and artistic study, discusses the occasional poetry of Borno men of letters, an examplar of Dr. Abdullah Jangudo. Borno is a region that heaped up by litterateurs and scholars whose reputations have risen in the air. So, people from near and far make up their minds to the region in order to take in and gather their knowledge in the various fields which have left considerable scientific and literary traces in the Arab-African heritage. The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of literary aspects that have almost been deserted by the researchers in the Arabic literature of Borno where the occasional poetry contains a valuable literary affluence and treasures. However, the study does not only make inquiries about the measures and the highest degree of Borno Arabic literary heritage intellectually, but also, about the factors that help to spread the Arabic culture in the region. Moreover, through its uses of historical and descriptive approach, the study has highlighted a number of characteristics of Borno Arabic poetry. In addition, it concludes with a number of findings; important among which is that the majority of Dr Abdullah's works are still manuscript and have not yet reached the hands of researchers. And the lack of researches about his poetic production, especially, at the academic levels, (degree, masters, etc) remains the most important challenge facing the researchers. The study recommends that the universities and centers in the region should include in their syllabuses, Borno Arabic Literature that will serve as a branch of the general Arabic literature which should be studied in the scientific researches. It also recommends that researchers should pay attention to this type of poetry (occasional poetry) to show the specialist in Arabic literature the importance of occasional poetry in preservation of literary heritage
