| Abstract: | The study dealt with the settlement of international border disputes by judicial means by focusing on West African countries, which have an important strategic position. More than half a century after the independence of the continent, any African country can still create a border dispute with any of its neighbors on economic or Social, or historical or political claims. These countries re-delineated the borders of the countries of the region, which led to the distribution of tribal border areas between several countries, causing the border disputes and internal conflicts that led to the disruption of the process of construction and development. The problem of the study is that border disputes are increasing because of the lack of planning and demarcation. This has led to tension and tension between the countries of the region and has almost led to conflicts between some countries of the region to war. The war has become an illegal means of settling disputes between countries It was therefore acceptable for the West African countries to resort to peaceful settlement through the means provided by international treaties or any other peaceful means of their choice. The study aimed at defining the international borders and the West Africa region and the causes of disputes and encouraging the West African countries to settle disputes peacefully. (This was explained by examples that were resolved peacefully and others were not presented to any side). The descriptive approach has been used to describe conflicts so that we can identify the roots of the conflict, making it easier to choose the appropriate settlement and analytical approach by analyzing the gaps and events with a view to determining the appropriate means for the settlement process. The study concluded many results, including the diversity of the means of sound settlement and the West African countries, the freedom to choose the appropriate way to settle them and the existing borders must be respected at the time of independence so as not to cause a border dispute that leads to war and threatens international peace and security. Among the recommendations of the study is to encourage the West African countries to settle their disputes by peaceful means and to make the choice of peace over the option of war and focus on limiting conflicts among the countries of the region because they are linked to common social, cultural and economic factors that may make the process of peace settlement easy. |
