Abstract

Abstract The study dealt with the foreign trade policy and its role in solving the deficit of the balance of payment; Ethiopia as a model. This study aimed to highlight the role of foreign trade in impacting the balance of payments and to know the reality and challenges which face the Ethiopian foreign trade policy in the light of the current international economic developments. This research include Four chapters; the first chapter discussed the methodological framework and previous studies, while the second chapter dealt with the theories and policies of foreign trade, and the third chapter discussed about the international balance of payments, while the fourth chapter dealt with the Ethiopian foreign trade policy and its role in balancing of the balance of payment .The researcher used the historical method and the analytical descriptive method, and then reached to a number of results among of those results: There is a positive relationship between good trade policy and the improvement of Ethiopian balance of payments, and the study also reached to the structure of the Ethiopian Foreign Trade Policy is characterized by mono-production mainly raw materials, and this expose Ethiopia for permanent deficit in its’ balance of payments. Based on these results the study recommended that Ethiopia should work on the reduction of customs, fiscal and administrative constraints in away to serve the interests of the national institutions and encourage the arrival of foreign investors, and it has to only base on importing capital and production goods with few consumer goods that cannot be capable to produce it locally.
